Researchers reporting in Health Psychology made the finding when they followed 38 dieters from 2 weeks before Thanksgiving until 2 weeks after New Year’s.

The men and women had already been on a weight-control regimen for an average of 50 weeks and had lost an average of 21 pounds each. But the researchers wanted to see if making a conscious effort to keep a written record of every single food that passed their lips would help them stay on track during the holiday season. Their findings: the 25 percent of the participants who were most consistent about writing down all the foods they ate managed to lose an average of 7 more pounds during the pre-Thanksgiving to post-New Year’s stretch. But the three quarters of the participants who were not as vigilant gained back 3 pounds, on average.

EAT INFECTION?

Although evidence is far from conclusive, recent research has hinted that being overweight might be linked to a specific virus. A study done at the University of Wisconsin Medical School reports that 15 percent of overweight subjects showed evidence of previous exposure to a virus (adenovirus Ad-36)that causes obesity in animals, while none of the lean subjects did. The study, however, involved only 199 subjects, and significant research remains to be done.
